Pete Sepp of National Taxpayers Union Discusses National Taxpayers Union's Pete Sepp: Why Medical Bills are High, Unpredictable, and Opaque on Health Policy Podcast

Published · Featuring Pete Sepp of National Taxpayers Union

WASHINGTON — May 28, 2026 — Pete Sepp, President of the National Taxpayers Union, joined the Health Policy Podcast to discuss the complexities and challenges surrounding medical billing in the U.S. healthcare system.

During the episode, Sepp highlighted the high, unpredictable, and opaque nature of medical costs that often leave patients confused and financially burdened. He explained how various factors, including hospital pricing practices and government reimbursement models, contribute to these issues.

Understanding the intricacies of medical billing is crucial for patients and policymakers alike. Sepp emphasized that without transparency and accountability, the healthcare system will continue to struggle with rising costs and inefficiencies.

"High costs, unpredictable costs, and opaque costs make it very difficult for a patient or even a doctor to figure out why a certain charge is being levied for a given service," Sepp said. He also noted, "There are bad incentives, frankly, baked into the entire system."

Sepp's insights shed light on the urgent need for reform in the U.S. healthcare system. Addressing these issues is essential for improving patient outcomes and reducing financial strain on individuals and families.
