Joel White, President of the Council for Affordable Health Coverage, discusses the critical issues of healthcare costs, market monopolies, and consumer advocacy in the latest episode of the Health Policy Podcast. The conversation highlights the impact of the Affordable Care Act on rising healthcare expenses and the need for reforms to support American families.
WASHINGTON — May 25, 2026 — Joel White, President of the Council for Affordable Health Coverage, joined the Health Policy Podcast to address the escalating healthcare costs in the United States, the monopolistic practices in the market, and the implications of the Affordable Care Act. The discussion emphasizes the urgent need for consumer advocacy and reform to alleviate financial burdens on families.
White pointed out that healthcare costs are significantly outpacing wages, with premiums increasing over 300% since 2000 while wages have only risen by 100%. "Health costs are really crushing American families right now," he said. He warned that by 2032, the typical American could spend 40% of their income on healthcare, up from 20% today.
The podcast also delves into the monopolistic nature of the healthcare market. White explained that 97% of hospital markets are highly concentrated, leading to uncompetitive pricing. "We think that we have free market healthcare in the United States and we don't," he stated. He attributed much of the problem to regulatory burdens imposed by Congress, which have incentivized consolidation among insurers and healthcare providers.
White advocates for transparency and consumer choice in healthcare, suggesting that empowering families to select their plans could lead to better outcomes. He emphasized the need to break up monopolies that dominate the market, stating, "The only way you could succeed and comply with all those regulations is if you got bigger."
The Council for Affordable Health Coverage is a coalition dedicated to driving down health costs and improving access to affordable healthcare for American families. The organization advocates for policies that promote competition and consumer choice in the healthcare market.
