Ross Marchand of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance discusses challenges in the FDA drug approval process, emphasizing the impact on patient access to treatments, healthcare regulation, and rising healthcare costs in the latest episode of the Health Policy Podcast. Marchand critiques the FDA's bureaucratic hurdles that delay access to lifesaving medications.

WASHINGTON — May 25, 2026 — Ross Marchand, Executive Director of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, joined the Health Policy Podcast to discuss the complexities of the FDA drug approval process. He highlighted the negative effects of regulatory barriers on patient access to essential treatments, the increasing costs associated with healthcare regulations, and the implications for overall healthcare costs.

Marchand's insights are drawn from a recent report titled "Blocking Breakthroughs," which outlines the growing rejection rates for medications over the past decade. He noted that the FDA often shifts the goalposts, creating additional hurdles for companies seeking approval. "The FDA is always shifting the goalposts and they are always making up new excuses to deny patients access," Marchand said.

The discussion also touched on the issue of bureaucratic inertia within the FDA, which Marchand described as a significant barrier to progress. "Unfortunately, there's a lot of bureaucratic inertia," he said, pointing out that while some isolated approvals have occurred, the overall trend remains one of increasing complexity and delays. He emphasized that the FDA's cautious approach can lead to missed opportunities for patients in need of timely access to medications.
