WASHINGTON — October 15, 2026 — Jan Himebaugh, President and CEO of the Washington Retail Association, joined the Health Policy Podcast to discuss the proposed bans on nonstick cookware in Washington State. The episode examines the implications of these regulations on the retail industry, consumer choice, and food affordability.
Himebaugh emphasized that retail theft is a significant concern for businesses of all sizes in Washington. "Retail theft is a huge issue for members large and small. In Washington, we think a survey says it's about $2.7 billion of product annually that's walking out of stores unpaid for," she said. This figure highlights the economic strain on retailers, which is compounded by other regulatory pressures, including proposed bans on cookware that could limit product availability and increase costs for consumers.
The discussion also focused on the unintended consequences of such bans. Himebaugh noted, "What you're doing is putting pressure particularly on the most disadvantaged among us because they're now having added pressure to figure out how to prepare food because they can't afford the pot or the pan to make it in." This statement underscores the potential for increased food insecurity as consumers face higher prices and fewer choices in cookware.
The Washington Retail Association represents a diverse coalition of retail businesses, from small independent shops to large national brands. The organization advocates for its members' interests and provides resources to help them navigate the regulatory landscape.
